Tragedy unfolded yesterday along Interstate 5 in Washington State when a Washington State Trooper was put in the worst possible position.  A man confronted him with a knife and resisted arrest.  Law enforcement said the man intended to commit “suicide by cop” and, in the end, that is exactly what happened.

The deceased man was identified as Michael Anthony Rude, 22, of Kent, Washington.

Michael Rude was listed as a Washington National Guard Soldier (Burien) and was shot alongside the freeway near Lacey.

Dispatch records show Rude had called 9-1-1 about 6:13 am Sunday morning near State Route 167 and reported he had a knife and was suicidal.  He also indicated that he wanted to attack any police officer who pulled him over.  He proceeded down Interstate 5 at speeds up to 80 mph.

Rude was eventually stopped close to milepost 110, southbound, near the Carpenter Road Exit.  He exited his vehicle, knife in hand and refused to comply with the officers on scene.

Sadly, circumstances led to the Soldier being shot and killed by one of the three of four Troopers who responded around 6:49 am.

The incident is under investigation and the State Trooper is on administrative leave until the conclusion of that investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for early this week.
